ASMUN Conference 2018
“New problems create new opportunities: 7.6 billion people together towards a better future.”
The ASMUN conference of 2018 will take place on the fifteenth of February at Podium Zuidhaege (Zuidhaege 2, 9401 NZ) in Assen. On this day, 131 students from both CS Vincent van Gogh and Carmelcollege will participate in the first MUN conference for high school students in the north of the Netherlands. The students are divided over 5 committees, each of which will tackle an urgent issue.

Committees
United Nations Security Council (UNSC)
The United Nations Security council is the smallest, but also the most powerful committee in the United Nations. Its extensive mandate consists maintaining international peace and security.
For ASMUN 2018, the Security Council has been tasked with deescalating the situation around the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The committee session will be attended by 15 member states and 3 observer states.

United Nations General Assembly 1st (UNGA1 / DISEC)
The first committee of the general assembly, also known as “Disarmament and International Security Committee” DISEC, focuses on maintaining peace and security by promoting disarmament.
For this conference, DISEC will dive into the topic of nuclear disarmament: How do we deal with the rising threat of a global nuclear war? For this committee, GA1 consists of 28 member states.

United Nations Group of Governmental Experts (UNGGE)
The United Nations Group of Governmental Experts was established in 2004 to enhance the security of global information and telecommunications systems. Their input in international cyber affairs and their continues promotion that cyber domain is getting more relevant each day.
At this years conference, 33 member states of the UNGGE will debate on how to define relevant laws for internet communication.

United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP)
The United Nations Environmental Programme focuseses on the protection of the environment and its biodiversity. The current focus of UNEP is climate change and pollution.
This year, UNEP will focus on the plastic pollution in the ocean. The 29 member states that are attending the committee session will attempt to find possible solutions for both the prevention and cleanup of plastic waste.

United Nations–African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID)
The United Nations-African Union Mission in Darfur is a joint African Union and United Nations peacekeeping force. This special committee has a mandate to bring stability to the Darfur-region while peace talks continue.
At ASMUN 2018, ANUMID contains 16 member states, 5 observer states and 3 NGOs (Non Governmental Organisations). Together, they will attempt to create solutions that will promote peace and safety in the aftermath of the Central African Republic Civil War.

Dear Delegates ,
We all applaud you for your excellent performance during the training day at CS Vincent Van Gogh today. After seeing the skills you have when it comes to representing a country during a committee sessions, we can only conclude that it is very likely that many of you will win an award.

Dear Delegates,
On the 11th of January, The ASMUN Organisation gave a MUN training at the Carmelcollege in Emmen. On this day, many of their students discovered their passion for MUN. We were happy to see that there were so many enthusiastic students in Emmen, and we are looking forward to seeing you in Assen!
